Why all the recent hype about saunas, and in particular infrared saunas?

Saunas have been around literally for thousands of years, and the potential health benefits of saunas are well documented. But in the last few years, more studies have come out that suggest significant positives for health and wellness.

The studies on the health benefits of saunas are promising.

The National Institutes of Health found that regular sauna use may have health benefits for athletes as well as people with cardiovascular and rheumatological disease, chronic fatigue, and allergies. The study also found sauna use may reduce overall mortality and incidences of cardiovascular events, as well as dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Association reported that breaking a sweat through a cardiovascular exercise that raises the heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain reduces the risk of cognitive problems. Sweating in a sauna can mirror the reaction our bodies have during exercise, so it may present similar benefits.

Another simple but important way saunas may help our mental wellness is by providing a stress-free zone for relaxation. A “safe haven” or “happy place”, free of devices; quiet, private time to decompress. We all know that reducing stress benefits our health and wellness!
