Draining & Refilling Your Hot Tub!

A+ hot tub and spa service provided by Flint Hills Spas

We recommend draining and refilling your hot tub 2x per year as a general rule.  This may need to be more frequently if you’re having a lot of trouble keeping your water quality in check, but generally 2x per year works for most people.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN TO DRAIN & REFILL?

The easy answer is to set a reminder on your calendar.  However over time as you “get to know” your hot tub, you’ll be able to tell when a water change is due.  The typical sign to look for is that, not matter what you do, the water clarity is just not as crisp and bright as you’ve come to expect.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR TIME OF YEAR TO DO THIS?

The time of year you do your water changes is up to you.  However we usually recommend Spring & Fall, as these are times when hot tubs tend to get lots of use and people are outside working in the yard more regularly.

ANY “TRICKS” I NEED TO KNOW?

Yes.  First, always remember to turn the GFCI breaker off before beginning the draining process.  Second, when the tub is empty clean and wipe down the inside of the spa.  Avoid using abrasive materials or cloth.  See your local dealer for cleaners that are designed specifically for hot tubs.  Third, when refilling, start by filling through the filter openings until the tub is at least 1/3 full.  This will help avoid an air lock in the pumps.  If you have a microfilter, start by filling through that filter opening, then move to the other filter(s) openings until the tub is about 1/3 full.

HOW DO I BALANCE THE WATER WHEN I FILL AND RESTART?

The exact chemicals needed when you fill and restart will depend on (a) your water quality and (b) what sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) you use.  In almost all cases we recommend adding a metal remover such as Metal Gon by Leisure Time when you start up.  If the water in your area is “soft”, you’ll want to add a hardness increaser such as Calcium Booster by Leisure Time. Then follow instructions for the amount of sanitizer and shock to add.  Call us with questions!
