Saunas grow in popularity every year as people learn more and more about the well-documented potential health benefits of saunas.
As saunas have surged in popularity, it seems everyone has jumped on the bandwagon—including big-box retailers like Costco and Sam’s Club. While the convenience and lower price tags are tempting, these mass-market saunas come with real risks that many buyers only discover after they’ve already brought one home. Many people wish they would have went with an infrared sauna instead.
The Takeaway: They’re Cheap for a Reason
The sauna manufacturers who supply big box stores must cut corners in the construction of the sauna in order to meet the low price guidelines of these big box stores. For example:
- LONGER HEATING TIMES. Big box saunas typically are single walled vs. the double walled saunas that Flint Hills Spas sells – thus big box saunas may be less efficient, with longer heating times.
- ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD. Big box saunas tend to be merely “Low EMF” saunas vs. the “Near-Zero EMF” saunas that we sell. While EMF is not a huge risk with infrared saunas, generally speaking Near-Zero = safer for the user.
- “BOXY” LOOK. Big box saunas are design more simple with a “boxy” look vs. a more elegant design that our saunas offer.
- LIMITED WARRANTY. We’ve heard from customers that the warranty on big box saunas can be quite limited.
- NO SERVICE DEPARTMENT. Sam’s Club or Costco do not have service departments you can go to for help or to have a service tech come out if you have a problem. With Flint Hills Spas, we DO have a service department and service team to help if needed.
These games big box stores play with saunas are exactly the same approach they take with the hot tubs they sell. We’ll never forget the time a husband and wife, who both work at Costco, bought a hot tub from us. When asked why they didn’t get a Costco hot tub, they responded “What, are you crazy?!” Cheap for a reason – poor quality construction.
